Description:
The Beta-hCG test measures the levels of the hormone beta-human chorionic gonadotropin in blood or urine. This hormone is produced by the placenta during pregnancy and is often used as a marker to confirm and monitor pregnancy.
Purpose of the Test:
•Confirm pregnancy: Beta-hCG levels are detectable in early pregnancy, as soon as 10 days after conception.
•Monitor pregnancy progress: Helps ensure the pregnancy is developing normally by checking hCG levels over time.
•Diagnose ectopic pregnancy: Low or abnormal levels can indicate an ectopic pregnancy or potential miscarriage.
•Screen for gestational trophoblastic diseases (GTD): Elevated levels may indicate conditions like molar pregnancy or other trophoblastic diseases.
•Detect and monitor certain cancers: Beta-hCG can be elevated in some cancers, such as testicular, ovarian, or choriocarcinoma.
Key Notes:
•Normal Beta-hCG levels double approximately every 48–72 hours in early pregnancy.
•Declining or stagnant levels during pregnancy may require medical attention.
•It is often combined with other tests like ultrasound or additional hormone levels for more accurate diagnosis.
